Ask about the method and the studs. Some stores pierce with a sterile single-use cartridge, others with a hollow needle. Starter studs in implant-grade titanium or 14K gold are the gentlest choice for sensitive ears; most places require a parent to be present for anyone under 18.

Good to know

Do jewelry stores pierce ears?

Many do, including a lot of mall jewelers and independent jewelers. Policies vary — some pierce walk-ins, some by appointment, and some only pierce ear lobes — so call the store before you go.

How long before I can change new earrings?

Ear lobe piercings are usually left with the starter studs in for at least six weeks, and cartilage piercings take much longer to heal. Follow the aftercare instructions the store gives you and ask before switching to hoops or heavier earrings.
