Ask about the era and the stones. Good estate dealers describe the period (Victorian, Art Deco, retro), test the metal and can tell you whether the stones are original. For a larger purchase, ask whether the piece comes with a written appraisal or a lab report for the main diamond.

What is the difference between estate, vintage and antique jewelry?

Estate jewelry simply means previously owned, whatever its age. Vintage usually describes pieces at least a few decades old, and antique is generally used for pieces about 100 years old or more.

Is estate jewelry cheaper than new jewelry?

Often, because the price does not include a new retail markup — but rare period pieces and signed designer jewelry can sell above the price of comparable new jewelry. Compare the metal, the stones and the condition, not just the price.
